Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar met External Affairs Minister S M Krishna here on Tuesday, ahead of the crucial Cauvery River Authority (CRA) meeting on Wednesday.
Both the leaders reportedly discussed the stand to be taken by the state on the issue of release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
Shettar’s meeting with Krishna assumes significance, as the latter hails from Mandya district where the farmers are staging a series of protests against release of water to the neighbouring state as “several parts of Karnataka are reeling under severe drought”.
The state government earlier had two rounds of meetings with floor leaders of all parties in the Karnataka Legislature, where it was unanimously resolved to convey the state’s inability to release water to Tamil Nadu following a shortfall in the South-West monsoon.
During the meetings, it was also resolved to appeal to the CRA to evolve a distress formula, taking into considerations the poor water storage level in almost all major reservoirs in the state, and to redraw the quantum of water to be released from Karnataka’s dams.
The CRA is meeting for the second time ever since it was established to resolve the Cauvery river water dispute. The previous CRA meeting was held during the NDA regime in 2003 and was chaired by the then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.
