KOCHI: The Crime Branch’s Hurt and Homicide wing, which is investigating the murder of liquor baron V M Mohan alias Mithila Mohan, has suffered another setback as one of the suspects from Mangalore went absconding. The person was under the surveillance of the Crime Branch for the past several weeks.According to sources in the Crime Branch, the person was familiar with Mohan and might have known about the culprits. “The person from a rural area near Mangalore was under our surveillance for the past several weeks. But as we were set to take him into custody, he escaped to a distant place. We are trying our best to trace him. The suspect was one of the five persons whom we shortlisted to be taken into custody for being involved in the murder,” sources said. “We are now forced to wait for the person to return so that he can be taken into custody. We have sought the assistance of Karnataka Police in the case,” a Crime Branch official said.Mohan, owner of Mithila Bar Hotel, Eramalloor, was shot by unidentified persons on April 6, 2006. The murder was a well-planned one as a major chunk of the city’s police force was deployed to provide security to an international cricket match played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kaloor on the same day.Though the case was handed over to the Crime Branch on June 17, 2006,no one has been arrested yet.
