New Delhi: The controversial section 66A of the Information Technology Act does not infringe on freedom of speech - that's what the Centre and the Maharashtra government told the Supreme Court in their affidavits on the Bal Thackeray Facebook post controversy on Thursday.
The Maharashtra government, however, added that the arrests of the two girls in Palghar, Mumbai, over their Facebook post was unwarranted.
The two girls were arrested for a post denouncing the bandh in Maharashtra after the Shiv Sena supremo's death. They were later released on bail.
The incident had sparked nationwide outrage who claimed that the IT Act was being misused by those in power to intimidate the citizens.
