BANGALORE: Thanks to the recent rain, getting leafy vegetables from outskirts to city has become dearer. B V Chikkanna, president, HOPCOMS, said “In the past 20-25 days, the city outskirts mainly Hoskote, Anekal and Doddabalapur have receivied a slight rainfall and this has affected the supply of leafy vegetables mainly coriander leaves, methi and palak.” This is the major reason for the rise in prices by at least 20 per cent when compared to the previous month is the affected supply to city markets. The coriander leaves now cost Rs 78 per kg, palak Rs38 per kg and methi Rs 33 per kg. “Generally, the city outskirts do not receive rainfall at this time. In addition, this being the marriage season, with escalating demand and lack of supply, the prices have further gone up” he said. “Though there is no rainfall now, farmers will still need some time to sow leafy vegetables again. It will take another week or two for us to get the normal supply to city, hopefully then the price will come down,” Chikkanna said.
