SALEM: The City Police on Wednesday achieved a breakthrough in the investigation into the case of a missing schoolboy with the arrest of a couple involved in the kidnap episode. Harikrishnan (16) a Plus One student and son of Venkatadas of Vasanth Nagar in Dadhagapatti, went missing on July 11. A complaint was lodged with the police by Harikrishnan’s father Venkatadas. A special team was formed by Commissioner of Police K Chockalingam to trace the boy. According to police, on the same day, Venkatadas received an anonymous call claiming that Harikrishnan had been kidnapped and would be released only if a ransom of `5 lakh was paid. The caller threatened the boy’s parents with dire consequences if they attempted to rescue the boy or inform the police.But Venkatadas kept the police informed about the call. In a surprising turn of events, Harikrishnan returned home on Wednesday. He told police that he was kidnapped by Arun (24) of Gugai. Arun, who had business dealings with the boy’s father, had asked Harikrishnan to come out of the house about 8 pm and took him in his bike to his house, where he held him captive. Police said Arun’s wife Gowri too was part of the plot.While negotiating the ransom with Venkatadas, Arun some how came to know that he was under police scanner and that his phone conversations were being tapped. He changed his plan and sent Harikrishnan home, warning him sternly that he should not tell anyone about the incident.The police, however, tracked down Arun and his wife Gowri and and arrested them on Wednesday.The Commissioner congratulated the special team and the Intelligence wing personnel. According to him, the couple had stated that they attempted to kidnap the boy knowing well that Venkatadas was making a lot of money in his business.
