CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday earmarked Rs 1.50 crore for constructing own buildings for employment exchanges in 10 districts - Nagapattinam, Nagercoil, Pudukottai, Virudhunagar, Erode, Ariyalur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Karur and Namakkal. This is the first phase of CM’s decision to construct buildings for all employment exchanges in the State. Employment exchanges play a crucial role. They register candidates, nominate them to employers and render vocational guidance. They also collect and compile labour market information and prepare youth for competitive exams. The increasing number of educated youth add to the number of those who approach the exchanges. However, the infrastructure facilities at these exchanges are insufficient.Of the 37 employment exchanges in the State, only those in Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tuticorin, Madurai and Coimbatore are functioning in own buildings. A special employment office for the differently-abled is functioning in Chennai. In addition to this, there is an exclusive office in Chennai to cater to the unskilled and technical personnel. There are two professional and executive employment offices in the State, one in Chennai and the other in Madurai.
