Kolkata: Kolkata's La Martiniere School principal Sunirmal Chakraborty and three teachers on Friday were cleared of all charges in the Rouvanjit Rawla suicide case. In 2010, the teenaged boy had committed suicide after he was allegedly caned and humiliated in the school.
Additional District Session judge passed an order saying that no prima facie case can be made out against the principal and the teachers. "There is no direct cause of abetment, no evidence of torture and cruelty, no ground to proceed against the accused for offences levelled against them by prosecution," said the judge.
The order was on framing of charges. The police had charged them under the Juvenile Justice Act and IPC 323.
The Junior Magistrate had included the charge of abetment of suicide - Section 305 of IPC in November 2010.
The 13-year-old Rouvanjit Rawla hanged himself in February 2010 a couple of days after he was caned in school for pulling off pranks in the classroom. Although Chakraborty admitted to the caning and tendered an apology, the school maintained that the two incidents were unrelated.
The school lawyers felt that even the lighter charges would be difficult to prove in the upcoming trial.
