Rohith Vemula's death: Hyderabad University reopens today
On January 17, Rohith hanged himself reportedly after being depressed over his expulsion from the university.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Central University (HCU) reopened on Monday in the midst of ongoing protest over Rohith Vemula's suicide.

The official circular issued by the registrar reads, "The HCU will continue functioning normally from Monday."

For the last two weeks student groups were demanding arrest of vice-chancellor Appa Rao as well as the ouster of union minister Bandaru Dattatreya and interim VC Dr Vipin Srivastava. They alleged that it was because of them Rohith took the extreme step. They have been accused of ostracizing Rohith and abetting the suicide.

Earlier, amid protest the VC (Rao) went on leave and Dr Vipin Srivastava took charge of the university as the interim VC on January 24

On January 29, Dr Vipin Srivastava, who was also under severe criticism from the student groups, went on leave. The reasons behind his leave are not known.

Rohith was one of the five Dalit scholars who were expelled by the University of Hyderabad in August 2015 for allegedly attacking a student activist belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

He was doing his PhD in science technology and society studies for the past two years.

On January 17, Rohith entered the NRS hostel, locked and hanged himself reportedly after being depressed over his expulsion from the university.
