BANGALORE: Bangalore Development Authority is currently working on reviving the Jakkur lake and giving it a new look. The re-structuring is taken up under the Lake Development Project. Jakkur residents said that the village Sampigehalli was initially a settlement around Jakkur Lake. Over a period of time, the lake lost its beauty and value after repeated illegal sand mining. It slowly became a garbage dumping ground with no semblance to the glorious lake it once was, with only some weed-filled pockets giving away its original identity. Now, the BDA has fenced the lake, created a path around it, and even put three artificial islands in the lake. Sodium vapour lamps will soon be installed along the path and a garden will de developed. “It is good to see the lake slowly regaining life. I grew up with the lake as my companion. I played and bathed here,” said 65-years-old Narasimhaiya, a resident of Jakkur. According to the Jakkur corporator Muneedra Kumar, even pending work such as clearing the weeds will be taken up soon. “BDA has spent Rs 17 crores to revive the lake. The work started two years ago and 90 per cent of the lake has been cleaned and developed. Soon people can enjoy the cool water and breeze in the park surrounding the lake. We are hoping that the restoration of the lake will soon lure the birds and that the natural beauty of the lake will be soon restored,” he said. Jakkur Lake is one of the few lakes that exist in North-East periphery of Bangalore. It is spread over 160 acres.
