TIRUPUR: Even as the flood waters washed away seven persons in the district, the local residents on Monday blamed the district administration for the tragedy. They alleged that they were caught unawares by the sudden flood as they were not issued a proper warning after the Noyyal was in spate. Further, they said that the incident was a fallout of widespread encroachment on the banks of the Sangilipallam stream and the fact that the government failed to allocate alternative site for those living on the encroached lands. The houses along the banks were built very close to each other— leaving no room for the flood water to drain out — and thus entered their houses, they claimed. As one of them said, “If we were alerted, we would have moved to safer places and such a tragedy -- the death of the seven -- could have been avoided.”
