BANGALORE: The members of a number of Resident Welfare Associations of Malleswaram and Vyalikaval met at the Sankey Tank Park on Sunday Monday and marched to MLA Ashwath Narayan's residents to protest against the proposed the widening of the Sankey Tank Road.
It may be remembered here that Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has announced that the road would be widened. "Do not force people to accept an illogical decision to widen Sankey Road," Secretary of Malleswaram Swabhimana Initiative Dr Meenakshi Bharath said. The residents were upset that there was no public consultation and no information given to them about the road widening. They called the decision 'illogical' and alleged it was based on a single survey. Dr Meenakshi Bharath also said that there were no notices given to the houses which would be affected by the expansion of the road.

It's corporatorVs residents

The residents felt that it was their right to meet their MLA to discuss their concerns but the corporator felt that they should find another forum for protest. He said that when the decision to widen the road was ratified in 2007, they had sought public opinion and received only 8,000 objections. While the corporator believed that 8,000 was a small number compared to the large population in the city, the residents felt that not one of their objections were even considered before making the decision to widen the road.

BBMP's version

The residents said that some of their houses had been marked without a notice or any form of information. Shivaprasad also argued that only 19 trees need to be felled.
