CHENNAI: Environment Minister B V Ramanna on Wednesday held a review meeting with Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) officials.Speaking to the press, Ramanna detailed the initiatives to be taken by the government for making TN pollution free. Management of municipal solid waste (MSW), controlling noise, air, water and industrial pollution were discussed as major issues. Environment secretary C V Shankar and member secretary K Karthikeyan were also present at the meeting.Responding to a question from Express on Chennai being identified as the noisiest city, Karthikeyan quoted an Anna University study and said that every five years there is an incremental noise load of 10 decibels putting the present average noise produced in the city to 85 decibels. “This might cause a lot of noise induced health problems. A lot of noise control measure are being introduced by the TNPCB as a slew of regulatory measures,” he said.On MSW management, he said that TN was looking at decentralising the landfill concept by introducing regional landfills. “The facility will be common for 3-4 municipalities and there will be stress on source segregation. A panel, including TNPCB officials is studying feasibility of this option.”Shankar said that while there was no major issue with the large industries, controlling the small and medium industries was the major issue. “Over 233 industries have been identified as critically polluting and is being reviewed periodically.”
