New Delhi: Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi has unveiled the successor to its entry-level Redmi 1S smartphone. Named Redmi 2, the new smartphone is priced at 699 yuan (approximately Rs 7,100) and will go on sale in China on January 9. There is no information as to when this phone will make its way to India.

The new Xiaomi Redmi 2 features a 4.7-inch (1280x720) IPS display, 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front camera.

The dual-SIM Redmi 2 has an internal storage space of 8GB (expandable up to 32GB) and will be available in 5 colours.

Xiaomi said the company sold a whopping 61.12 million smartphones in 2014, up 227 per cent year on year.

Total sales revenue with tax reached 74.3 billion yuan ($12 billion) up 135 per cent year on year, company founder and CEO Lei Jun said in an open email to his employees.

Sales of the brand expanded to six countries and regions over the past year, including India, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.

Xiamoi ran into trouble in India after brisk sales following a lawsuit filed by Ericsson for violation of its patents.

The company was valued at $45 billion in the new round of financing late December, state-run Xinhua quoted Lei as saying.

Xiaomi, which means "millet" in Chinese, was founded in April, 2010 by Lei and his friends in Zhongguancun, Beijing's technology hub which has been called "China's Silicon Valley".

Xiaomi's first smartphone made its debut in August, 2011.
