New York: Ashrita Furman has become the first person to hold 100 Guinness Book of World Records simultaneously, after he recited and translated a poem into 111 languages.
The resident from Jamaica, Queens, assembled a group on Tuesday that recited late Indian spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy’s poem ‘Precious’ in 111 languages at City Hall Park.
While over 100 participants — followers of Chinmoy from around the globe — recited the eight-line poem in languages ranging from Dzongkha to Picard, Furman recited it in Zulu.
"It was fun learning about many of these languages - quite a few I never even heard of," the New York Daily News quoted him as saying.
The feat broke the previous record, in which ''Values on Community Harmony'' was read in 79 languages.
Furman is a health-food store manager, and has credited about 230 Guinness records to his name since 1979 — when he did 27,000 jumping jacks in five hours.
Earlier this year, he broke the record for eating the most M&Ms with chopsticks in a minute after he ate 38.
