CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) informed the Madras High Court on Friday that it could undertake the selection process for appointment of 185 civil judges in the State. The statement was made in a counter affidavit filed by the TNPSC before the First Bench comprising CJ M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam, in response to a PIL from the Advocates Forum for Social Justice, by its president K Balu. The PIL challenged the orders of the State government and the HC, which stated that the HC would conduct the selection process directly. Balu contended that the government and the High Court could not usurp the power of the TNPSC, the constitutional body for recruitment of civil judges. In view of the change in circumstances, including the appointment of retired IPS officer R Nataraj as the chairman of the TNPSC and his initiation of various reforms aimed at greater transparency in each stage of the selection process, the counter said that the TNPSC should be permitted to undertake the selection process. In view of the reforms by the TNPSC, it was confident of completing the recruitment process within six months from the date of notification and would report compliance of orders of the SC, passed orders in similar matter, the counter said.
