BANGALORE: Day two of the Rashtriya Krishimela 2011 was successful in attracting about two lakh people, which included farmers from across Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, with students and general public from the city at the Gandhi Krishi Vignyan Kendra (GKVK) campus of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) on Thursday.Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda presented Dr M H Marigowda Award to two successful farmers, one each from about 22 taluks in Hassan, Mandya, Davangere and Kolar districts, and the farmers - Gangaiah from Ramnagaram district and Chandrashekhara B Patil from Dharwad.Clearing rumours that the Global Agricultural Investors Meet 2012 would exploit the land of farmers, Sadananda Gowda said such rumours are aimed at misleading farmers.  The investors meet would actually help in improving their land, he noted.  He also promised the farmers that he would discuss the issues of sugarcane and onion pricing with Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar shortly. He appreciated the initiative of the University of Agricultural Sciences for felicitating farmers. The chief minister called upon farmers to take up integrated farming which is being proven successful across the country.  Minister for Horticulture S A Ravindranath and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences Dr K Narayana Gowda were present on the occasion. Discover high yielding crops at Theme parkTo avoid chaos on a campus spread across 1,300 acres and save the staff and students time while demonstrating their plots,  GKVK, UAS, for the first time, has come up with a theme park. The theme park is spread across 10 acres set up for demonstrating all crop growing patterns at one place. Farmers can get information about high yielding hybrid varieties of green gram, red gram, black gram, horse gram, ragi and sunflower plantation methods at one go. Speaking to Express, K T Puttarangaswamy, from All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) for Sunflower, UAS, GKVK said, “All these KBSH-1, KBSH-44, KBSH-41 are high yielding varieties and mature in 90-95 days. In 2008, we came up with KBSH-53 hybrid variety of sunflower which has about 44 per cent of oil content with a yielding capacity of 17-27 quintals per hectares and this is tolerant to powdery mildew disease. We are coming up with two more new varieties.”
