KOCHI: The Gujarati Cultural Exhibition that began on November 1 at Women’s Association Hall, Diwans road,Ernakulam has a fair bit of exciting stuff to offer. The expo has been touring around Kerala for the past 20 years and is back in the city again.“The people of Kerala love fashionable and trendy items. Keeping this in mind, we are introducing a wide range of unique products,’’says K Arunachalam, manager of the Emporium. It showcases different handicrafts and hand printed items of nine states including Gujarat. A speciality is the rare ethnic collection of sarees,churidars,dress materials,ladies and men’s kurtas, linen, jewellery and wooden articles from Gujarat,Rajasthan,West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh,Uttar Pradesh,Tamil Nadu ,Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. sarees,ghagras,bed spreads, salwar kameez etc are available in block prints, tribal prints, lace work, thread work,mirror work ,banjara work,jamdhani thread work and kashmeeri thread work. The main highlight of the expo is a live puppet show, with its burst of colour and puppets that include snake charmers and courtesans. Another highlight of the exhibition is the made-to-order carvings of gulmohar wood that ranges anywhere between Rs 200 to Rs 6000 which seems like a pretty good bargain. Jewellery is available in lac,coral,beads,stones,pearl, along with antique ones. Specialised items like acupressure treatment equipments,medicinal wood controlling diabetes,cholesterol and blood pressure; medicinal powders and essential oils from wayanad ,wooden needles,channapatna toys,pooja items and so on are also for sale. Purses, belts, bags,wallets... are available in pure leather at prices ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 600. Shoe pieces in sesame wood from Uttar Pradesh are also a highlight at the exhibition.The exhibition will be open till 8 pm on all days till November 15.
