The family of the teenager accused in the Pune drink-driving case is most likely connected to the underworld. His grandfather allegedly paid gangster Chhota Rajan in a shootout case in Pune.

According to police, the case against prominent real estate developer Vishal Agarwal’s father, identified as SB Agarwal, was registered at the Bundgarden police station and later handed over to the CBI. The accused had even sought anticipatory bail in the matter.

Vishal Agarwal, whose 17-year-old son is accused of killing two software engineers after he crashed his speeding luxury car into their motorcycle, was arrested on Tuesday (May 21) from Sambhajinagar.

The horrific incident has sparked nationwide outrage with Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis calling for the teen to be tried as an adult after the victims’ parents called their children’s deaths “murder” and demanded strict action. He said there is no police negligence in the matter, while denying any kind of pressure on the probe.

In fact, the boy was granted bail on a surety of Rs 7,500 and an assurance from his grandfather to keep him away from bad company. Months away from turning 18, he was granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board hours after the crash on relatively lenient conditions.

“His grandfather has given an assurance that he will keep the Child-in-Conflict with Law (CCL) away from any bad company and he will concentrate on his study or any vocational course useful for his career. He is ready to abide by the condition imposed on him. Therefore, it is just and proper to release the CCL on bail,” stated the order passed by the Juvenile Justice Board on May 19.

Earlier in the day, however, the Board issued a notice to the boy to appear before it. This comes after the Pune police approached it with a petition to review its bail order.
