CHENNAI: Prisoners in Tamil Nadu would be able to keep in touch with their family and friends over phone as the state government has decided to provide them telephone facilities."To enable prisoners and juveniles lodged in various central prisons, women's special prisons and juvenile homes in the state contact their family and friends, telecom service centres will be set up," Minister for Prisons G Senthamizhan told the state assembly today.A sum of Rs 1.58 crore would be spent for this purpose, he said making the policy announcements pertaining to his department for 2011-12.He also said the state government would take up reserach towards preventing prison inmates from repeating their crimes and reforming them.A qualified team of researchers will be formed for this purpose at the University of Madras and a one-time grant of Rs one crore will be allotted for this scheme with Rs 15 lakh proposed to be spent every year.In the Policy Note tabled in the House, Senthamizhan said a total of 2,528 convict prisoners in the state were underging various courses such as MCA and other post-graduate and under-graduate Arts and Science courses.Senthamizhan, who also holds Information, Law and Courts, said that the state government "continues to urge the Central Government for introduction of Tamil language in the proceedings of the Madras High Court," referring to the long-pending demand.
