Lucknow: Left red-faced over the claims of explosive substance being recovered from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly last month, UP police chief Sulkhan Singh has sought the suspension of Forensic Science Laboratory director SB Upadhyay for “misleading” the administration.

News18 had earlier reported that the Agra unit of the Forensic Science Laboratory had dismissed the findings of the Lucknow FSP.

The latter had said that the white powder found near the seat of Leader of Opposition Ram Govind Chaudhary was pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), a highly explosive substance, triggering a security scare.

The Agra FSL countered the findings, saying the samples it received had no explosives.

The Yogi government had clarified last week that the initial sample was not sent to the Agra lab, but to the Lucknow centre and preliminary reports had confirmed the presence of nitrate.

“The sample wasn’t sent to Agra as they don’t have the means to conduct such tests. FSL Lucknow has found the substance to be water insoluble. Different reagents confirm the presence of a nitrate, preliminary tests using explosive detection kit were positive about PETN,” Principal Secretary (Home) had said.

UP DGP Sulkhan Singh has now written to the Yogi Adityanath government, seeking action against Lucknow FSL director SB Upadhyay.

Sources said Upadhyay previously served as Bihar FSL Director and has faced charges of financial irregularities. According to sources, Upadhyay is also facing a trial over submitting fake forensic reports before various district and sessions courts in Bihar.
