CHENNAI: Politicians cutting across party lines feel it is important for more members of the younger generation to enter politics, and point to a lack of encouragement from the older generation coupled with the lack of inner party democracy as hurdles to the entry of youngsters.Congress MP S S Ramasubbu and BJP MP Arjun Ram Meghwal, who were being honoured with the Sansad Ratna Award, said here on Saturday that senior politicians should not discourage youngsters from entering politics and that many parties were not grooming youngsters.Ramasubbu said youngsters were hesitant to join politics because the media showed the political system in a negative light. “The political system may be corrupt but not all politicians are corrupt,” he said. Meghwal said the absence of an internal democratic system stood in the way of youngsters joining politics.Speaking on the occasion, former governor of West Bengal Gopalkrishna Gandhi urged Parliament to provide solutions to three important problems that beset the nation. “We need solutions to the ogre of black money, the related demon of corrupt practices, including the use of intimidation in elections, and widespread inefficiency and gross mismanagement of resources,” he said.Veteran parliamentarian Era Sezhiyan commented on how MPs were ignoring Question Hour in Parliament. On a day when there are 20 questions to be asked during the session, MPs pose only two to three questions. Interestingly, in Britain MPs ask around 19 questions a day and discuss another eight topical questions.
