New Delhi: Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Saturday said that politicians cutting across party lines were more accountable to the people than another institution.
Delivering a lecture on "judicial activism", Jaitley said legislature was one of "the few accountable institutions in the country".
"If you have somebody entering civil service, he may not be competent enough but the system has to suffer him for 35 years," PTI quoted him as saying.
"A judge, when he gets into the system, enjoys various protections. He may be very brilliant or may not be doing enough work; may be a man of great ethics or of poor integrity.
"But then he cannot be even criticised and the system has to live with him," Jaitley remarked.
In the same breath, Jaitley also criticised the fourth estate for the "low level of accountability".
"But those who are in public life (politicians) suffer a much higher degree of accountability. Politicians face criticism by the day. We are questioned in gatherings, within our own party and in legislature," Jaitley added.
