Police probing threat call made to KM Shaji MLA

Chevayur Police on Monday intensified the probe into the life threatening call made to Azhikode MLA and Indian Union Muslim League leader K M Shaji, from an unknown number from UAE.

According to the police officials, Chevayur police has registered a case under various sections of IT Act on Sunday after a complaint filed by Shaji, that he received threatening calls from +555555 number twice to his mobile phone number 9995811147 on Saturday. The caller said he would be bumped off and nothing would be left for the MLA to go to the mosque.  The unknown caller abused his family members also over phone, added police. Police identified that the call came from UAE via internet and transferred the call details to cyber cell to identify the caller and right location. A team led by Chevayur C I Prakashan Padannayil is investigating the case. “The call came on morning and evening on Saturday. Investigation is under progress and we will trace the caller soon”, said C I Prakashan Padannayil. The police will also look into the possibilities of political enmity behind the threatening call.

Earlier also Shaji got threat calls over phone after he won the Azhikode constituency which was considered a strong CPM bastion and there were chances of political enmity behind the call, said sources related to K M Shaji MLA. One month ago, CPM Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan alleged that K M Shaji MLA was encouraging religious fundamentalism in Kannur district and had formed an unholy nexus between Congress, BJP RSS and NDF against CPM to tarnish the image of the party. The arrest of Jayarajan, T V Rajesh MLA and other leaders  in connection with the murder of Muslim Youth League leader Abdul Shukkoor of Ariyil also created enmity against him and this also may be a reason behind the threat, said sources.
