Plea to suspend 8 officials for police firing

CHENNAI: A writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the government and the DGP to suspend eight officials, including Ramanathapuram District Collector V Arun Roy, IGP Rajesh Das, DIG Sandheep Mittal and SP Maheshwar Kaliraj, for their alleged involvement in the firing in which six persons were killed at Paramakudi on September 11.The first bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam, before which the public interest writ petition from advocate P Puglen thi came for hearing on Monday, referred the matter to the second bench comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and M Venugopal. The petitioner alleged that the police unleashed violence against the people belonging to a Scheduled Caste when they assembled in large numbers at Paramakudi to celebrate the memorial day of Dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran.
