Pak boxers may lose gold for drug use
A Sri Lankan woman athlete and two Pakistan boxers have tested positive for use of steroids in the SAF Games.

Colombo: A Sri Lankan woman athlete and two Pakistan boxers who took part in the South Asian Games have tested positive for banned steroids and are set to lose their gold medals, officials said on Sunday.

Pakistan boxers Nauman Karim and Dur Mahmud tested positive for a banned steroid, Sri Lankan officials said, adding that it would mean silver winners, Harsha Kumara and Indika Kumara of Sri Lanka stand to gain gold medals.

However, Sri Lankan sprinter Jani Chaturangani De Silva, who was part of the island's gold medal winning women's 4x100 relay team, has been tested positive at the laboratory tests held in Malaysia.

Her coach Derwin Perera said urine samples obtained after both finals had reportedly tested positive for anabolic steroid Nandralone.

"We will have an inquiry later this week where we will question the athlete. Then we will submit a report to the national Olympic committee and a decision would then be taken," he said.

Silva is the second Sri Lankan athlete to test positive for drugs after Susanthika Jayasinghe, a bronze medallist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Jayasinghe was twice tested positive for the identical anabolic steroid but was later cleared by the IAAF.
