CHENNAI: It was an unusual sight at Lalit Kala Akademi on Monday- otherwise reclusive artists were brought together to create magic on canvas in front of the public eye, much to the delight of art connoisseurs and students. This was at the regional painter’s camp, featuring a dozen artists from all Southern states, Maharashtra and Goa. The camp was inaugurated by renowned artist Achuthan Kudallur. “I enjoy using mythological characters in my paintings. That gives me the liberty to use vibrant colours to add to the drama of the painting. It makes the canvas come alive,” says Vitesh N Naik, a Goan artist, who was doing pencil sketches of abstract figures resembling common mythological figures. Artist Raj More from Mumbai was attempting an acrylic painting of a bull on canvas  to depict what he called Mumbai’s inimitable charm. The bull, interestingly, was depicted wearing a pair of aviators that reflected an image of the Indian superstar, Amitabh Bachchan. This too, he claimed, was to ‘represent the spirit of Mumbai and Bollywood in the most perfect way.’“We have been organising similar camps for over 40 years now. These artists interact with each other and get to know more about their respective states,” said Rm Palaniappan, Regional Secretary, Lalit Kala Akademi. The camp is on till March 4.
