HYDERABAD: An accused in the murder of an elderly woman, who happens to be a relative of minister of state for defence, MM Pallam Raju was on Friday sentenced to life imprisonment by the VIII Additional Metropolitan Sessions court in Nampally.The murder took place in Punjagutta police limits in 2010. The VIII Additional Metropolitan Magistrate R Sudhakar Naidu sentenced the accused Umesh Sahani, a professional carpenter to life imprisonment and Rs 1,000 penalty.A septuagenarian, M Susheela Devi was murdered in her flat at a residential locality abutting Road No 1 in Banjara Hills around 12.30 p.m on April 27, 2010.Susheela stayed alone in her flat in the Lotus Esplendito and also owned five flats. Her two daughters live in the US. Punjagutta police registered a case under section 302 (murder for gain) and 380 (theft) of IPC.Umesh Sahani (35), a native of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh had worked in Devi’s flat for two months and asked to paint another flat owned by her in the same building.Since he had been working there for past few months, the painter knew the woman was living alone and had some jewellery.On April 27 around 12.30 pm, the accused entered her flat in an inebriated condition seeking keys of the flat he was working in. As the woman walked into the kitchen, he lunged at her banging her head against the wall.As she fell on the floor, the painter throttled her to death. He decamped with Rs 50,000 cash and 40 tola gold ornaments.On April 29, police arrested Umesh Sahani and recovered the stolen cash and gold ornaments from him.
