Gross violations are taking place in the stone quarries functioning in the district, but police and revenue officials turn a blind eye as they are being bribed by quarry owners.
The owners get licence for operating a quarry on a particular patta land from the district Mines department but operate in nearby revenue poromboke lands too.
The Tamilnadu Minor Mineral Concession Rules,1959, Rule no 36, restricts leasing of sites within 300 metres from habitation, within 50-metre radius of road, railway track, river or any water body and within 10-metre radius of streams. But officials allured by bribes, often throw all such regulations to the winds.
The government’s efforts to develop the hills into ecologically acceptable area through the high-level Hill Area Conservation Authority (HACA) has also fallen flat.
In Kanyakumari district, 36 villages in four taluks come under HACA. The government had specified in a GO that even listed activities like pig rearing required clearance from HACA. But in Kanyakumari, numerous stone quarries continue to function in the HACA notified villages without permission, admitted a highly placed official.
