Los Angeles: Interview with Tom Fleischman and John Midgley for film ‘Hugo

Q. Congratulations.

A. [Tom Fleischman] Thank you.

Q. So, uhm, in talking with some of your collaborators on this film now that Martin is going to the third dimension, what was it like mixing for the third dimension? I mean, what...how does this space, how does the space on the screen change the......all space you have to work with in post.

A. [Fleischman] I always said when I first...this is my first 3D film that I've done. And when they first talked to me about this, my attitude was that we have been mixing in 3D for years. We've had surround speakers in the theatres, and we've always been able to bring 3D to the screen. So, in that sense it really wasn't too much of a challenge. We were fortunate enough to be able to use a new theatre format which was going to be 7.1 format, which splits the surround speakers into four channels instead of two. And that allows us to open up the sounds and make it a little bit more open and more [inaudible]. It's very nice.

Q. So, you...you are sitting there in the theatre and, clearly, 'Hugo' is racking up technical award after technical award. Did you begin to feel like "this is going to be our night"? Did you dare to think that and what...what swept through your heads when they did call your name?

A. [Fleischman] Well, it's been a long time coming. And I was...I am still in shock.

A. [Midgley] I was a bit scared when we won the first two, that's always a worry, I think. You might have given it to somebody else.

A. [Fleischman] I was very happy to see Bobby Richardson win. That was really a great thing.

Q. Thank you very much, gentlemen, and congratulations.

A. [Both] Thank you.

What's your reaction?
