New Delhi: Monica Bedi clad in a white sari? Not a scene from one of her movies, but the reality from today onwards following her conviction by a court in Hyderabad for fraudulently obtaining a passport.
Women convicts are allowed to wear only white saris and Bedi, who was sentenced to five years in prison, will have to follow suit.
Since she was extradited from Portugal with her boyfriend, gangster Abu Salem, in November last year, Bedi has been seen making appearances in court in fashionable outfits, including designer salwar kameez and tight-fitting trousers and matching tops.
Supreme Court advocate Kamini Jaiswal said, "A woman convict is allowed to wear only a white sari in jail. However, it will also depend on the manual of the jail where she is lodged, as it may some changes depending on local customs.”
"In some areas, white is considered bad so the convicts wear a black sari," she added.
When Bedi was sent to Chanchulguda prison on November 11 last year, she came with five suitcases of clothes and personal belongings. As a prisoner facing trial, she was allowed to wear any dress of her choice.
According to reports, Salem, while returning to India from Portugal, had brought four suitcases of clothes and personal belongings. But once here, he no longer appeared interested in flashy or designer clothes.
He has been seen in blue jeans and shirts during appearances in court and when he was taken to St George Hospital in Mumbai for a medical check.
