A man has been arrested over the killings in Jhansi, officials said. The Special Task Force of Uttar Pradesh Police, which is probing the killings, detained 12 people and arrested a suspect named Tej Pal Singh.
"We are on a lookout for the culprits, four teams have been dispatched to Madhya Pradesh and we hope to get a breakthrough soon," Deputy Inspector General of police (DIG) V.K. Garg told IANS.
The deceased Babli Tiwari (52) was Sarpanch of Kudhar village in the state. "Babli Tiwari, her husband Brajesh Tiwari (55), son Puneet (12) and nephew Mayank (14) were on their way to Jhansi in a car when unidentified assailants forced them to stop their vehicle and pumped bullets in them," RC Bhoj, Niwadi (Madhya Pradesh) town Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) told reporters.
Kudhar is about 100 km from the district headquarter and falls under the limit of Niwadi.
"The incident took place in Jhansi area and a case has been registered in this regard here," Jhansi Circle Officer, Kalyan Singh confirmed. The bodies have been recovered and sent for autopsy to Jhansi Medical College, police said.
On November 24, 2013, a day before the polling for the Assembly polls, Tiwari's another nephew and BJP leader Neeraj Tiwari was shot at allegedly by Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Satyvrat Arjaria following a election-related dispute in Kudhar, police said.
A case was also registered against the SP leader at that time and police suspect that Sunday's attack on Tiwari family could be related to that incident, they said, adding that hunt is on to nab the assailants.
