Watch: Tamil Nadu Authorities Use Drone To Deliver Biryani To Dogs Stranded In Cauvery Floods
Local authorities came up with an innovative solution to feed strays, using a drone to deliver biryani to the dogs trapped in floodwaters.

Tamil Nadu is witnessing severe floods, and it’s not just people who are in trouble. Animals are also caught in the chaos. Recently, a video showing stray dogs stranded on a small patch of land in the middle of the overflowing Cauvery River near Mettur Dam went viral.

These dogs have been stuck there for three days without food. To help them, local authorities came up with an innovative solution, using a drone to deliver biryani. The fire and rescue department teamed up with GEOTechnoValley, a company known for its drone technology, to provide temporary relief. The drone, capable of carrying up to 30 kg, successfully delivered the much-needed food to the stranded animals.

According to The Times of India, the problem came to light when KP Venkatesan from the Mettur fire station reached out to Sarveshwaran so that they could deliver life jackets to people in floodwaters using their drones. During the rescue mission, they initially saw only one black dog, but they soon realised six more dogs were trapped in the same area. The animals got trapped on the land after water was released from the nearby dam. Villagers noticed the dog and alerted the rescue team. Due to the strong water flow from the dam, the rescuers weren’t able to reach the dogs directly.

Meanwhile, officials are also preparing to use a specialised drone that could carry a cage to rescue the stranded dogs. The plan is to drop food into the cage from the drone and once a dog enters, the cage door will be closed, which would allow the drone to lift the animal to safety, according to Sarveshwaran. Although the dogs are not visible in the video, the drone can be seen delivering food to them.

According to News9, heavy rains in the Cauvery River area led to flood-like conditions in the low-lying regions of Salem after water was released from the Mettur Dam.

On the same day, the Mukkombu Dam in Tiruchirapalli had a water flow of 168,000 cusecs from the Mettur Dam, with 43,874 cusecs flowing into the Cauvery River and 125,000 cusecs into the Kollidam. Reportedly, on July 31, the Dam reached its maximum capacity of 120 feet for the 43rd time in its 90-year history.
