CHENNAI: Even as negotiations between the hospital administrators and representatives of striking nurses continued before the Labour Commissioner, Apollo Hospitals Chairman Dr Prathap C Reddy on Tuesday said that they were hopeful of a resolution by March 8. He said that the nurses were beginning to see the futility of their strike and have realised that the hospital management was not against them in any way. Stating that the strike was instigated by an “external group” with a vested agenda, Preetha Reddy, Apollo Hospitals MD said, “We keep getting text messages from a few nurses saying that they want to come back, but are afraid to do so.” However, a representative of the nurses association of Apollo Hospitals said that they were going ahead with their protest on Wednesday with the support of the CPI, CITU and other trade unions. CITU State Gen Secy A Soundara Rajan even sent a notice of support and urged the government to ensure that private nurses are paid on par with government nurses. Meanwhile, nurses at Madras Medical Mission, who set off the protest returned to work. MMM CEO Joe Kurian said the revised wages were accepted and normalcy was being restored.
