NRI to head Oxford media school
Indian-American academic and journalist Dr Sarmila Bose becomes the first Director of the Journalism school at Oxford.

New Delhi: Indian-American academic and journalist, Dr Sarmila Bose, becomes the first Director of the new Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the Department of Politics and International Relations at Oxford University.

Bose, who was schooled in Kolkata, received her A B from Bryn Mawr College and her MPA and PhD in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University.

Dr Bose has held academic positions at Harvard University, Warwick University, George Washington University and Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

Member of a prominent political family of India, she has a distinguished career as a journalist and commentator in India notably with the Ananda Bazar Patrika (ABP) Group. As academic and journalist she has worked on a wide range of topics in politics, public policy and international affairs.

On the aims of the Institute, Dr Sarmila Bose said: "Oxford University is in a position to apply the highest standards of analytical scrutiny to public information provided by news media, in a global, comparative framework. The Institute will bring the depth, rigour and range of scholarship at Oxford in a vibrant and productive engagement with the world of practice."

Her mother Krishna Bose was Member of Parliament from Bengal and until recently chaired the Indian parliament's standing committee on foreign relations.

Dr Bose's great uncle, the noted writer Nirad C Chaudhuri, lived in Oxford till his death a few years ago and was awarded an honorary D.Litt. by Oxford University.

Dr Bose heads an international institute at Oxford and her Cambridge-educated English husband presides over the globalisation of one of India's largest companies as executive director of Tata Sons.

Talking about Dr Bose’s career, the Head of the Department of Politics and International Relations, Professor Neil MacFarlane, said: “Dr Bose's career embodies the bridge we are trying to build between journalism and academic life. Her appointment also speaks to the Institute's desire to understand the evolution of media in its global, as well as national context.”
