Associates of a private loan shark took control of a bus in Uttar Pradesh's Agra on Wednesday to recover the loan taken by the owner after he died. All 34 passengers were reported safe and have reached Jhansi.

The bus has been recovered by Etawah police from near an eatery in Balrai. Senior officers have reached the spot and are conducting an inquiry. Details of the probe are being shared with Agra police. Meanwhile, the hunt is on to nab the accused, Pradeep Gupta, who had lent money to the bus owner.

On Wednesday morning, a group of men took over a private bus that was headed to Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior from Gurugram with 34 passengers on board. The incident took place in Agra's Thana Malpura area in the wee hours of Wednesday. After asking the driver and conductor to get off, the men had driven the bus to an unknown location.

The conductor of the bus said that a group of four men first asked the driver to get off and later, forced him into another car.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Agra, Babloo Kumar had earlier, blamed a finance firm and said three people who got off the bus told the police that representatives of the finance company had boarded the vehicle.

"Preliminary information reveals the bus has been taken away by the people from a finance company which had financed the vehicle. A case has been registered and police teams formed to search for it," he said.

"The men in SUVs then rode after the bus and overtook it at Malpura area. They got into the bus and forcibly brought down the driver and the conductor. They also told the passengers to not scream and told them that they would not be harmed," he added.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi said the bus driver, personnel and passengers are safe.

"Regarding the bus incident in Agra, the finance firm had illegally seized the bus. The driver, staff and passengers are safe. The bus owner died yesterday (Tuesday) and his son is conducting the last rites," he said in a statement.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken note of the incident and has said that strict action would be taken against the culprits.
