KOCHI:The Kochi Corporation Council on Monday decided to entrust the renovation of the Ravipuram crematorium with the Ernakulam Rotary Club. The Club will undertake the renovation works by spending its own fund. The estimated cost of renovation will be Rs 1.25 crore. The Rotary Club will be allowed to put a name board at the entrance of the crematorium as a recognition for the renovation work. However, the Kochi Corporation will be the sole authority to manage the crematorium after the renovation. Meanwhile, ruling front councillor N Venugopal said that since running of the crematorium is a service, the civic body should make sure that no financial burden is imposed on the public as part of the renovation.
In his reply, Mayor Tony Chammany said that the club would not be allowed to collect money for cremation. "The entire renovation work will be supervised by the Corporation Health Inspector and Assistant Executive Engineer concerned," the Mayor added.
