THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Almost a month has passed since the police top brass in the city made public its ambitious project - to prepare a crime map with minute details of the crime-prone areas in the city. But nothing has materialised till date. “It was an ambitious project, no doubt. But there was no enthusiasm at the top to work it out,” sources said. The project was meant to obtain a clear idea about the crime-sensitive areas of the city so that the cops could be more vigilant about those particular areas. The city cops had started the task of preparing the map carrying the outline of 20 police stations which are under the jurisdiction of the City Police Commissioner and the crime spots under these police stations a month ago. But the process lost pace somewhere and did not move in the desired way. The idea was to collect accurate details about the crime-prone areas in the backdrop of the rise in the number of crimes. It was a step to strictly prevent even the minute lapses in detecting crimes and to easily identify the locality of criminals. But more than that, it was a unique attempt to prevent the growth of emerging criminals by detecting every step taken by them. However, the city police chief said that the police had not given up the project. “We have not given up that task. Only thing is that we have kept it aside for some other time and will resume the work without much delay,” said T J Jose. Details of every crime occurring in the crime-prone areas, like robbery, murder, political crimes, chain-snatching, goonda activities etc would also be shown on the map. It is also expected to trace the reasons for the emergence of criminals. Once the map is prepared, it would be updated with the occurrence of subsequent crimes.
