New Delhi: As BJP President Rajnath Singh decided to offer his arrest in connection with the CD row, Uttar Pradesh police chief clarified on Sunday that merely filing an FIR is no grounds for an arrest.
"Simply on the basis of an FIR, an arrest cannot be affected," UP Director-General of Police G L Sharma was quoted by PTI.
He said he would try to persuade Singh that he should not insist on being arrested.
Sharma said necessary security arrangements would be made to maintain peace in this city, where the BJP chief was planning to court arrest as part of the party's ‘Jan Aakrosh Divas’ (public anger day) across the country on Monday.
His comments come in reaction to Singh's decision in view of his name figuring in the FIR lodged by Election Commission in the controversial CD case.
BJP President Rajnath Singh, named in an FIR filed in connection with a controversial CD with derogatory references to Muslims, on Saturday slammed the Election Commission for its "unjustified" step. He said police was free to arrest him.
Senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon, also named in the FIR, said in Lucknow on Saturday that he too was ready to be arrested along with Singh.
