KOCHI: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Saturday made it clear that the UDF would field its own candidate in the Neyyattinkara Assembly seat, which fell vacant following CPM MLA R Selvaraj’s resignation. Addressing newsmen at Piravom, he reiterated that Selvaraj had already announced that he would not be coming to the UDF.Terming as baseless and unfortunate the CPM’s charge that the Congress and the UDF were behind the resignation, the Chief Minister said the Congress or the UDF did not want to remain in power by any political machination.“Selvaraj has said that he had resigned because he was a victim of factionalism in the party,” Chandy said, adding that the Congress never got involved in the internal affairs of another party. There are rumours that Selvaraj would contest the election as an independent with UDF support. He said the CPM was now dragging the Congress and the UDF into the issue as they wanted to hide the truth of what was happening within the party. On the allegations that an amount of about Rs 20 lakh was allotted to Selvaraj’s constituency a week before his resignation, Chandy clarified that there was nothing unusual in allotting funds for various projects in the Neyyattinkara constituency.“Selvaraj had, through a submission in the Assembly, sought funds for projects in his constituency four months ago. But it was not allotted. During this session, he raised the issue again and funds were allotted,” he said.
