1. Peter Mukerjea looking to sell house for legal battle

Once upon a time, Peter Mukerjea former CEO of Star India ­ used to divide his time between Bristol (UK), Marbella (Spain) and Marlow (his building in Worli). It was indeed a fairytale story ­ he had just gone into retirement after selling his stake in INX Media for hundreds of crores. Cut to the present day and Peter is having to sell his flat to fund his legal battle, The Mirror reports.

The 3,000-sq feet, duplex house on the fifth floor of Marlow building is estimated to be in the range of Rs 15 ­ 20 crore. Peter, who has been booked for murder, conspiracy, destruction of evidence in the Sheena Bora murder case, has hired the most expensive criminal lawyer in the city who charges Rs 3-5 lakh per appearance in court. So far, the legal costs for Peter have escalated to around Rs 1.5 crore.

2. Dead wife' turns up on television show two years after burial

A grieving husband suffered the greatest shock of his life when he saw his dead wife, whom he had buried two years back after she was killed in a road accident, appear on a popular TV show, the Daily Mirror reported. Abragh Mohamed had even held a funeral for his beloved wife after he thought she was dead. Mohamed was told by doctors at Casablanca hospital that his wife had succumbed to the serious injuries she had suffered during the accident.

But she turned up on a TV programme 'Al Mujtafun (Desaparecidos)' or 'Al Mujtafun (Disappeared)', produced to reconnect loved ones who have lost contact over the years. Mohamed's wife called in then to request the host of the show to help her connect with her husband whom she has lost contract with. She gave the producers of the show his name, address and contact number.

3. 'Didn't have money for dad's treatment, nor for his barsi'

In October 2012, when Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) announced a lockdown, a housewife from Delhi, wrote a note and hanged herself. Susmita Chakravarti's suicide note read: “My husband works with Kingfisher where they have not paid him salary for the last six months. We are in acute financial crisis and so I am committing suicide.“

The 45-year-old also wrote that she feared her husband would lose his job. In the next few months, 7,000 KFA employees lost their jobs.They worked for 18 months, without a salary only to lose their jobs in the end. On Saturday , former KFA employees will send a letter to the prime minister.

"Can the government pay the dues of the employees ex gratia and recover from the same company and the management of Kingfisher?“ the letter asks. The Times of India spoke to a cross-section of former employees of the now defunct airline about their struggles.

4. Rs 100 crore shot to smithereens as bullets do not fit the barrels

For a cash-strapped state, buying crores worth of ammo that can never be fired is akin to shooting itself in the foot. It has been brought to the Chief Minister's notice that bullets worth Rs 100 crore, purchased during the erstwhile Congress-NCP's regime, have been lying unused as they do not fit the standard-issue rifle that police officers of the state use, the Mirror reports.

CM Devendra Fadnavis has now asked additional chief secretary (ACS, home) KP Bakshi to conduct an inquiry into the procurement then made by the home department. The direction follows a letter addressed to the CM by city BJP chief Ashish Shelar, in which he has brought up the matter of the 7.62x51mm NATO belt ammunition -there are some 4.80 lakh of them.

BJP national vice-president and Gujarat in-charge Om Mathur's jibe at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi late Thursday evening for siding with the students of JNU on the Kanhaiya controversy has sparked a bitter war of words between the two parties.

Addressing BJP workers in Surat, Mathur had said it was good that "he (Rahul Gandhi) is not married else his children would have also joined the seditious gang", the Times of India reported.

6. Indiana ZONES - Dalits thrashed for 'touching Brahmin'

A Dalit family , including a pregnant woman, was allegedly beaten up with sticks because one of them accidentally touched the hand of a Brahmin man. The incident reportedly occurred in the remote village of Kyuri near Pinahat town in Agra district on Friday afternoon, the Times of India reported. The family belongs to the Valmiki Dalit caste.

"My younger son Sonu had gone to a sweet shop owned by a Brahmin man named Anil Sharma.While paying for the sweets, Sonu accidentally touched Sharma's hand, which infuriated him. He then beat Sonu up,“ said Vineeta, one of the victims, talking to TOI on re turning home, Sonu narrated the incident to Vineeta, who then went to the shop with a group of women to protest against the assault. “Later, Sharma and some men came to our house armed with wooden sticks and beat us up. They kicked a preg nant woman in the womb,“ Vi neeta added.

7. In Bengal, Rs 1-crore lottery winner has Rs 200 in pocket, tax tension on mind

Mohijul Rahima Sheikh is probably the poorest millionaire in the country. The 22-year-old migrant worker from West Bengal’s Lakhmipur made headlines when he won Rs 1 crore in a lottery run by the Kerala government in Kozhikode five days ago. Today, he has Rs 200 in his wallet. “People don’t believe that I haven’t got the money yet. They think I am being cautious,” says Mohijul, who returned to his village in Burdwan yesterday.

The house is brimming with happiness, but Mohijul’s brows are furrowed. “I have applied for a PAN card, the SBI bank manager where I submitted my cheque told me that I won’t get the money without a card,” says Mohijul. Then there is the question of “tax”, a question that the 12-member Sheikh family with a combined monthly income of Rs 12,000 have never encountered before. “Some people tell me that they will deduct 20 per cent tax, others say it will be 35 percent, can you please tell me how much will I get?” asks Mohijul, The Indian Express reports.

As the debate over the alleged fake encounter of suspected LeT operative Ishrat Jahan raged in the Lok Sabha on Friday, BJP MP Anurag Thakur lashed out at Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi for carrying out a “political vendetta” against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and “siding with Maoists”. “Congress tried to kill two birds with one stone… by slowly killing the Intelligence agencies and terminating their political opponents. What Ishrat Jahan could not do with a gun, and those with her could not accomplish, the same task was taken up by Sonia Gandhi who tried to finish Modi politically by implicating him in false cases,” he said.

Alleging that the Congress misused the country’s intelligence agencies, Thakur said that an affidavit claiming that Ishrat Jahan was a terrorist was made on August 6, 2009, only to be changed in September that year.

9. Babu forced to delete pro-Rohith FB posts

Balrampur district collector, Alex Paul Menon, who was held captive by Maoists for 12 days in May 2012, was on Friday reportedly forced to delete his Facebook `shares' of articles that called for support to Jawaharlal Nehru Student Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar and Hyderabad scholar Rohith Vemula after objections from bureaucrats and BJP officials.

Menon had shared more than 12 articles on Rohith and Kanhaiya on his Facebook page. He had also expressed solidarity with the two through a post on Twitter, the Times of India reported.

10. UP government to post painters at mosques for Holi instashine

An uncommon order for Holi has gone out in communally sensitive Bareilly, which has roughly equal Hindu-Muslim population.“White wash immediately the walls of mosques that have colour thrown on them,“ the local administration has said even as it sent out directions for setting up of special teams of painters that would be on standby on March 24.

Groups of painters requisitioned by the municipal cor poration and nagar panchayat would be deputed at spots close to mosques. No `DJ music' would also be allowed during Holi processions, the Times of India reported.
