New Delhi: The Indian security establishment is in for an overhaul as the chiefs of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) all are set to retire in the month of December.
CBI Director Anil Sinha will retire on December 2 while Director (IB) Dineshwar Sharma and R&AW chief Rajinder Khanna has time till the year end.
While the pick for the CBI is likely to be purely a political decision the positions in IB and R&AW could see serious deliberations considering the worsening of relations with Pakistan in recent months post the Uri attacks in September.
News18 learns that for selecting the next head of India’s premier investigative agency, the government is poring over a list of 44 IPS officers from IPS batches between 1979 and 1982 who have CBI or vigilance experience.
The top contender is CBI Special Director RK Dutta (1981 Karnataka cadre) who has spent 18 years in the CBI. He has worked on all ranks in the bureau and scores high on merit. Dutta also handled 2G and coal block allotment cases.
Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma (1979 batch AGMUT cadre) is also in the race, however, he has no previous experience in CBI. Archana Ramachandran, the 1980-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer who had previously worked in the CBI, is another name doing the rounds. Her re-induction by former head Ranjit Sinha as additional director without the approval of a high-power committee headed by CVC had kicked up a row and it was later struck down by the Supreme Court.
Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police KC Chaudhary (1979 Bihar cadre), who already has had a 4-year stint in CBI, is also in the reckoning along with Satish Mathur (1981 batch Maharashtra), who is now DGP Maharashtra.
Choices for the next IB and R&AW heads are likely to see less options.
Rajiv Jain (1980 batch Jharkhand cadre), who is the No.2 in IB, is the frontrunner for heading India’s internal intelligence agency. Jain was earlier state intelligence bureau head for Delhi and Ahmedabad.
In R&AW, the top choice seems to be the head of the Aviation Research Centre Anil Dhasmana (1980 batch, Madhya Pradesh) who is currently the No.2 in R&AW. Dhasmana has held many important assignments of India’s premier external intelligence agency in the past and is tipped to be the man in charge of the all-crucial Pakistan and Afghanistan desk.
