We will improve strength in the Rajya Sabha by nearly 17 members in favour of GST by April: Government sources

New Delhi: The NDA government is looking forward to pass the Goods and Service Tax (GST) Bill in the Budget session sensing that it will not be able to pass it in the current session.

A top government sources said, "We are looking at the budget session to pass the GST Bill and the April 1, 2016 deadline to pass the Bill can be extended to June 1, 2016. We will improve strength in the Rajya Sabha by nearly 17 members in favour of GST by April."

On December 15, contending that India has an opportunity to touch 9 per cent growth, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley made a bid to end the deadlock on GST Bill as he reached out to Congress, asking it to think about the "legacy" it would be leaving behind by opposing it.

He had said GST Bill, which aims at reforming the direct taxation system in the country, can push the country's growth by one and one-and-a-half per cent.

Reaching out to main opposition party which is opposing the Bill that is pending in Rajya Sabha, Jaitley had said, "I would urge the current leadership of Congress party also to look at the history and legacy they want to leave behind. Support these measures so that we are able to grow faster. We have more money to get rid of poverty much faster."
