Dimapur: Twelve people have been arrested on Sunday in Dimapur city of Nagaland in connection with the lynching of a rape accused on Thursday. The situation is slowly returning to normalcy, three days after a 35-year-old rape accused was dragged out of Dimapur Central Jail by a mob of thousands, lynched and then hanged from a clock tower.
Six people were arrested earlier, thus taking the number of arrests so far to 18. More arrests are likely to be made as authorities scan through images and videos of the incident.
The last rites of rape accused Syed Farid Khan will be held on Sunday in his hometown of Karimganj in Assam. His family alleged that he was framed and demands justice.
Meanwhile, the curfew has been lifted till 3 PM but mobile, Internet and SMS services have been blocked for the next 48 hours in Dimapur. The administration has deployed 11 companies of India Reserve Battalion and three companies of Central Reserved Police Force to maintain law and order.
Protesting against the incident, truckers from Assam have stopped plying to Nagaland. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also blamed the central security forces for failing to curb the mob.
