Mumbai: Very soon the face of Asia's largest slum Dharavi is going to change. Maharashtra Government has decided to redevelop the slum. The slum which is spread over 550 acres will be divided into 5 sectors and high rise building would be constructed.

Dharavi has been used by filmmakers to bring out the grim reality of Mumbai and has been the central plot of many Bollywood blockbusters. Even some Hollywood films have been shot in the slums of Dharavi, which is located in the heart of Mumbai.

MHADA and the private developers will give a new face to the slum and construct seven-storey buildings for those affected. Slum dwellers will be given a flat of 300 sq ft each. Ongoing business establishments would be relocated and the area falling under Sector 5 would be developed first.

But for the people of Dharavi the government's plan does not seem to be a good one. About 14 million people live in Dharavi and they want a flat as well as some compensation in cash. They say that those who whose houses are smaller than 300 sq ft should get a flat of 350 sq ft while those living in a house whose are is more than 300 sq ft should get a bigger flat of 750 sq ft. They are also demanding that a corpus fund of Rs 10 lakh should be created for the affected people.

What's your reaction?
