A petition has been filed before the Kerala High Court seeking directives to the Kerala and Tamil Nadu government to give adequate compensation to the victims of the riots that occurred in the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border in the wake of the Mullaperiyar dam dispute.

The petitioners International Human Rights Association secretary Sebastian Puzhakara of Kottayam and T M Joseph of Tamil Nadu also sought a directive to the state governments to pay a compensation to the 97 victims and to take effective steps for their rehabilitation. The petitioners submitted that some of the victims had given representations to the Chief Minister of Kerala stating the serious problems faced by the residents of Theni, Madurai and Dindigal, but without yielding any results.

The residents in the area suffered a huge loss between December 6 and December 14, 2011, in the border areas owing to the Mullaperiyar issue.

The petitioners also sought a directive to the Reserve Bank of India to give appropriate directions to all the banks under it not to initiate any recovery proceedings against the victims.
