Patna: Less than 24 hours after CNN-IBN broke the story of Anjali and Rimjhim, the two sisters who had been abandoned by their parents in their school's hostel, their mother has returned.
The two girls, aged five and six respectively, had not seen their parents since 13 months and have been staying in the hostel of Patna's Shanti Niketan school.
Their mother, who hails from Muzaffarpur, returned to her daughters on Thursday after seeing their story on CNN-IBN. She was recognised by both girls as well as the school authorities.
When asked for the reason for abandoning them, the mother explained that she resided in a red-light area.
"Where we lived, it was not a good place. We could not have brought them up there," she told CNN-IBN.
She added that her husband had been involved in many shady business deals and had lost a lot of money. Currently, he is in jail.
"I could not have kept them," the mother said.
She does not intend to take the girls back with her but came to see them only because she was moved by the visuals she saw on TV of her daughters weeping for their parents. She insisted that she wants Anjali and Rimjhim to remain in the hostel.
The mother added that she is, however, amenable to receiving financial aid for funding her daughters' education but wants nothing for herself or her husband.
Anjali and Rimjhim's parents had never returned after admitting them into the school. The authorities later found out that the parents had given a fake residential address.
School principal Avineshwar Prasad Singh said that the authorities had been trying to look for the parents since February but could not get through to their mobiles. The parents were not located at the address they had given, either.
