Meteorological Department confirmed that 11 of the 30 districts in the state have received monsoon rains.

Bhubaneswar: The killer heat in Orissa is over with the much awaited monsoon finally arriving in the state on Sunday.

The Meteorological Department in Bhubaneswar has confirmed that 11 of the 30 districts in the state have already received monsoon rains and the rest are likely to be covered in the next 48 hours. Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore districts have received the maximum rainfall in last 24 hours.

The rains arrived just as the three-day 'Raja festival' started.

Mercury had shot upto 48 degree Celsius in many part s of the state and 53 people had reportedly died due heat wave deaths in the state.

Last year 15 of Orissa's 30 districts faced drought due to poor and erratic rains with several farmers committing suicides.

Moreover, monsoon is intensifying in several other parts of India as well. Schools and colleges in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu have been closed following heavy showers.
