Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, often targeted by a section of the NGOs, has accused them of harbouring anti-national agenda and demanded a code to regulate utilisation of foreign funds received by them.
Speaking at a book release function in New Delhi on Saturday, Modi asked the NGO sector to be more accountable and warned people of their "hidden and anti-national agenda", according to an official release issued here Sunday.
"If the government, politicians and political parties are expected to be accountable and transparent, why not the NGOs?" he asked.
The chief minister blasted the "five-star culture" of foreign-funded organisations and called for a credit rating of the NGOs as per their performance.
"NGOs' funding sources, their efficiency, their expenditure, their work culture and the outcome of their efforts need to be taken into account to evaluate their performance," he said.
A number of NGOs and civil rights bodies have been critical of Modi's handling of communal violence in the state in 2002 that left at least 1,000 dead.
