A surprise visit by medical education minister S A Ramdass opened a can of worms at the Victoria Hospital here on Tuesday. Attached to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), the Victoria hospital was not maintained properly and the pathetic condition shocked the minister.The medical education minister found that out of 173 doctors, only 73 were present in the hospital. There were around 82 doctors who reported late to their duties. However, a biometric system is in place, but is not functioning properly.On his visit to the female wards, he observed that filthy and torn bed sheets were being used, for which he ordered suspension of a grade two nurse in the ward. While he found that the stock details were not maintained properly, he ordered the suspension of the kitchen in charge, Savari Raju.Taking stringent action against the late-comers, the medical education minister has directed the medical superintendent to issue notices to all the absentees as well as the late-comers. “Their salaries will also be deducted for one day,” said RamdassHe directed the medical superintendent of the hospital to issue show cause notices to Dr Pragnya , the house surgeon for dereliction of duty. Gracia, a nurse from the  MRI section and Dr Prakash from the out patients department were also served notices.The citizen help desk, meant to acknowledge patients’ problems and guide them in seeking treatment was not functioning properly for which the minister recommended to improve its functioning. Even the security guards were not spared from his sight and he intended to replace them with home guards.Ramdass also said that notices will be served to the assistant executive engineer for not maintaining the lift. He also ordered the demolition of canteen labs and the association building which are not in good condition.Speaking to City Express Dr BG Tilak, medical superintendent, Victoria Hospital said that the details of late-comers have already been sent to the dean and director Dr OS Sidapappa. “We do have biometric system in our hospital and after three warnings, we deduct the salary of those employees who come under me. I have submitted a detailed report about the doctors to the director of BMCRI,” said Dr BG Tilak.
