TIRUCHY: Measures are being taken to generate additional electricity and there will be no power cuts by 2012, said Natham R Viswanathan, State Minister for Electricity and Excise.He was speaking at the valedictory function of ‘Green Energy Virumbuvom’, a State-level inter-school competition jointly organised by the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) and Rotary International, here on Friday.Viswanathan said Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was fully aware of the need for power and was initiating measures to generate surplus power.“As there exists a big gap between energy demand and supply, the people of Tamil Nadu face power cuts and generating surplus amount of electricity turns out to be the main task for the government,” he said.Viswanathan said the amount of power generated in Tamil Nadu was 8,500 MW, but the amount of power required was 11,000 MW. The Chief Minister was taking measures to bridge this gap, he added.Stating that renewable source of energy was the only alternative source for power generation, he said, based on the electoral promise made by the Chief Minister, measures were being taken for ‘Green Houses’ projects, he said.
